Shambhavi Mahamudra
A 21-minute kriya transmitted by Sadhguru as part of Isha Inner Engineering. It is not a meditation technique. It is not a relaxation method. It is a technology — a precise sequence of breath, sound, lock, and stillness designed to move prana through the system and create the conditions for inner experience.
What is described here are the individual components — their mechanics, their physiology, their traditional context. The complete practice, its exact sequence, and its transmission are given only in the Isha Inner Engineering program. If you intend to practice, receive it from a qualified teacher.
After Vipreet Shwas, all three kumbhakas are performed together in a single flow — not as separate practices but as one continuous movement of prana. First: antah kumbhaka — lungs full, breath retained with Jalandhara Bandha (neck lock). Then exhale completely and immediately enter bahya kumbhaka — lungs empty, Uddiyana Bandha (stomach lock) and Mula Bandha (root lock) applied. Finally: release all locks and simply observe the natural breath without controlling it — Kevala Kumbhaka, the spontaneous stillness. This three-stage movement maps to the three states of consciousness: creation, dissolution, and the ground.
When Jalandhara (neck), Uddiyana (stomach), and Mula Bandha (Mal Dwar) are applied simultaneously during a single retention, this is called Maha Bandha — the great lock. The system is completely sealed: nothing escapes up through the throat, down through the root, or outward through the belly. What is inside, stays inside. In that contained stillness, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika says, “all sins are destroyed and all attainments become possible.” The text is not speaking of moral transgressions but of the knots (granthis) — the points of contraction in the energy body at the Mooladhara, Anahata, and Ajna centres — that prevent the movement of prana.
Shambhavi Mahamudra is transmitted through Isha Inner Engineering — a 7-day intensive or the online program followed by the in-person Shambhavi initiation. The sequence described here reflects publicly available teachings. The precise timing, ratios, and energetic guidance are given only in the programme. If you have not received the initiation, the practices above are still valuable as standalone pranayama — but do not attempt to reconstruct the full 21-minute kriya from written instructions alone.
The full 21-minute Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya is taught only through Isha's Inner Engineering program (it requires initiation). These resources explain how it works and teach the freely-available Shambhavi Mudra.
