ग़ज़लghazalGhazal

A string of independent couplets (sher) bound only by a shared meter, radeef and qaafiya — each couplet a complete poem in itself.

A poem developing a single theme from start to finish, its verses connected in thought — the closest cousin to the modern English poem.

A lyric meant to be sung, built on a refrain (mukhda) that returns after each stanza (antara).

The modern geet — everyday imagery and contemporary idiom carried on a song's lyricism.

A two-line Hindi couplet of 13+11 matras per line, complete in one thought — the meter of Kabir, Rahim, Tulsi.

A self-contained quatrain — one complete idea in four lines, unattached to any longer poem.

A quatrain rhyming a-a-b-a on a fixed set of meters, turning on a single pointed idea (Khayyam's form).

क़ताqat'aQat'a

A short cluster of couplets that must be read together — unlike the ghazal's independent shers, these complete one another.

A long narrative poem in rhyming couplets (each with its own rhyme) — romances, morals and mystic tales.

An extended ode of praise (of a patron, saint or the divine), grand in diction and sustained in one rhyme.

An elegy of mourning — classically for Karbala — usually in six-line stanzas (musaddas).

(5-line)

Praise poems: hamd (of God), naat (of the Prophet), manqabat (of a saint or revered figure).

Unmetered writing — story, essay, memoir. When it borrows poetry's compression and imagery it becomes the prose-poem (nasri nazm).

Not a fixed classical form. The term is used loosely for two ghazals set in the same zameen (identical radeef + qaafiya + meter) — often a poet's reply (javaab) to another's ghazal.

A ghazal whose shers all develop one continuous theme — as against the usual ghair-musalsal, where each sher stands alone.

→ To scan a misra into laghu-guru and find its bahr, use तक़्ती · Taqti.
